Class News for the Week of October 16, 2017

Reading – This week we will be working on identifying the main idea of a story. We will also discuss details. We will have our reading assessment on Thursday, October 19th.

Writing – We are working on writing narratives. Please have your child write stories at home. Please encourage them to have the following things when writing sentences: capital letters, punctuation, and ask “Does my sentence make sense?”

Math – We will be starting topic 2: Addition Strategies


Science – We will start the week by finishing up our discussion about the sun and moon. On Tuesday we will start discussing the solar system. We will be having a science assessment next Friday, October 27th. A study guide will be coming home today. Please take time to study the information.

Reminders:

Please send party money into school ASAP. Our Halloween Party will take place on Friday, October 27th from 1:30-3:30. If you are interested in helping with the party, please let me know ASAP. Parents who help must have their clearances on file and have paid their PTO dues for the year. Thank you! 

Upcoming Events:

NSE Scholastic Book Fair – October 16th - 20th. Our class will do our shopping on Wednesday, October 18th.

Book orders are due Friday, October 20th.

Class News for the Week of October 2, 2017

ReadingThis week we will continue working on our story, Twin Club. We will be focusing on character, setting, and plot. Our first reading assessment will take place on Friday, October 6th.

Writing – We are still writing friendly letters to each other. Today we finished up our friendly letter to our principal, Ms. Whitaker. Tomorrow we will rewrite them and address envelopes for her.

MathThank you for practicing the math flashcards with your child. I am noticing a big difference since the beginning of the school year! The students are doing a great job with addition. Our first math assessment was completed today. We will be starting topic 2 tomorrow. This topic will focus on addition strategies.

ScienceOur focus this week is on the moon and stars. We will be talking about the night sky. We will also be discussing constellations and the phases of the moon.


The students did a great job this past week with our PBIS behavior system. This week we are focusing on teamwork. If your child comes home with a “dress down ticket”, they are permitted to wear what they would like. Please keep in mind that it should be appropriate for school. This means clothing without holes, no inappropriate language, no flip-flops or tank tops. There is no fee for these PBIS dress down days.

Reminders

Students will be going outside for recess daily (weather permitting). Please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately.

Due to having a late lunch, our class will be having a snack mid-morning. Please send a snack into school with your child each day.

Classroom News for the Week of September 25, 2017

ReadingThis week we will start focusing on our first reading story, The Twin Club. Your child will bring their book home tomorrow. Please cover the reading book by the end of the week.

Starting this week in class, some students will be getting different homework. Please check your child’s folder for a decodable reader and reading packet. Please sign the red stamps that state “Parent Signature” after reading 3x’s.

Writing – We are still writing friendly letters to each other. This week we are working on a friendly letter to our principal, Ms. Whitaker.

Class News for the Week of September 18, 2017

ReadingThis week we will be focusing our attention on reading long vowel words (CVe) and we are still establishing reading groups. During this time, we are practicing how to work on our “Story Elements Portfolio”. Also, your child will be bringing home high-frequency word flashcards. Please practice these words. Test will be on Friday.

In addition, I like to give differentiated homework to the students based on their reading ability. This week your child will either have a decodable reader for homework or a reading packet. Please check your child’s folder each evening. Either way, please have your child read the book or assigned pages in the packet three times and please sign on the stamped area stating that homework was completed.

Writing – Last week our class wrote friendly letters to our computer teacher, Mr. Glessner. The children were so surprised when he wrote back to them!! We will continue to work on writing these letters. If you get a chance, take a quick trip to the local post office and show your child around. We have been talking a lot about how our mail system works.

Math - We will review and practice using small groups in our classroom. We will discuss our routine and expectations on how groups should run smoothly and properly within our classroom. During this time, we will also focus our attention on addition. Please practice the addition flashcards each evening with your child. We will have an addition quiz on Friday. Also, the students will have a math worksheet each evening for homework. It could be an addition sheet or the back of the math mat. Please check with your child each evening.
