Homework for the week of September 19, 2011

Thank you for checking our homework helpline. I am so pleased with the way the students are adjusting to first grade. This will be a very busy week as we continue to establish our routine.

In reading we will continue to work on Pig in a Wig. This story focuses on realism and fantasy as well as the students being able to summarize important parts of a story. We will have our reading test on Wednesday, September 21. On Thursday we will start our next story, The Big Blue Ox. This story will focus on characters and setting as well as visualizing. It's really important for students to be able to visualize because when they make pictures in their mind of the setting, characters, and events, it's easier for them to understand the story.

In math we will work on the following:
1. Identifying morning and afternoon
2. Identifying first, last, between, and middle
3. Identifying first, second, and third
4. Acting out "Some, Some More" and "Some, Some Went Away" stories
5. Identifying a triangle and the the number of sides a triangle has
6. Sorting by one attribute
7. Making shapes on a geoboard
8. Identifying inside and outside
9. Acting out and drawing pictures for "Some, Some More"
and "Some, Some Went Away" stories.

In grammar we will continue working on identifying naming parts of a sentence. Our grammar assessment will be on Wednesday, September 21st. On Thursday we will start looking at action parts of a sentence (verbs).

We will continue working on spelling words with short i. We will have our pretest on Tuesday, September 20th. Our final spelling test will take place on Wednesday, September 21st. On Thursday we will look at our new spelling list which will contain words with the short o sound.

In phonics we will continue to work on words that contain the final x (example: fox), short i (example: pig), short o (example: top) and -s plurals (cats). Plurals are words that mean more than one.

Reminders: Book orders are on Friday and we will also have a pep rally on Friday.
