This will be a very busy week once again. On Friday we will have our Halloween party and parade. The parade will start at 2:15 p.m. Please send your child’s costume to school in a bag. The children will have time set aside to change into their costumes. All parents who have their clearances on file and have paid their PTO membership for this year are permitted to help at the party. The party will immediately follow the parade. If you would like to send treats in for the students, that is fine, but please be sure that they are store bought.
This week in reading we will continue reading Animal Park. We will have our reading assessment on Wednesday, October 26th. This week we are focusing on cause and effect as well as our strategy, Monitor and Fix Up. I am teaching the students that good readers notice the things on a page, such as photographs or illustrations that give information and that can help them understand the words. On Thursday and Friday (if needed) we will also have our Unit 1 reading test. This test will focus on all the skills and strategies we have learned this first unit.
There will be no spelling words or test this week.
In science, we will continue working on balancing objects. We will also read the story, Mirette on the High Wire by Emily Arnold McCully. This is a great story about a young girl who meets the great Bellini and wants to follow in his footsteps, walking on a high wire.
In math we will be learning the following this week:
1. Ordering numbers to 20
2. Adding 1 to a number
3. Writing “Some, Some Went Away” stories
4. Creating subtraction problem situations
5. Counting backward from 10 to 1
6. Identifying morning, afternoon, evening, and night
7. Estimating and measuring length using nonstandard units
We will be having a math assessment on Thursday, October 27th on the following:
1. Solving “Some, Some More” story problems
2. Writing numbers sentences
3. Using a pictograph
4. Identifying left and right
In grammar we will continue working on identifying questions and using questions in our writing. Our grammar assessment will take place on Wednesday, October 26th.
In phonics we will review short u and e words and final and initial consonant blends. For unit 2, the phonics may become challenging for the students so you will see a little sheet coming home with your child stating the rules that we are practicing for phonics that week. Please keep these papers in a safe place because your child may need to refer to them in the future.
As always, should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at jwiscount@northschuylkill.net, via note, or by calling 570-874-0466 ext. 3217.
