Homework for the week of November 7, 2011

I can’t believe how quickly our school year is going. The children are really doing well with our schedule and they are very eager to learn new skills and concepts. This will be a short week being that there is no school on Friday due to an Act 80 Day. Several other reminders are:

1.Picture retakes are scheduled for Tuesday, November 8th. If you would like your child to have his/her picture retaken, please send in the original package.

2.If you have not already done so, please sign and send back the bottom portion of your child’s report card.

This week in reading we will be focusing on cause & effect as well as using illustrations to help us understand what the story is about. Being that this is a short week, we will have our reading assessment on Tuesday, November 15th. Our reading story is The Farmer in the Hat pgs. 40-53. Also, starting the second marking period, students will be reading their own reading test. I will be here to help them should they need help blending a word or need clarification with something. I will be reading all other tests to the students with the exception of reading.

In science we will continue learning about balance. We are still working on constructing toys that demonstrate spinning.

This week in grammar we will be working on identifying proper nouns. Special nouns for people, places, animals and things are called proper nouns. Proper nouns begin with a capital letter. Our grammar assessment will also take place on Tuesday, November 15th.

In spelling we will work on spelling long a words. Our spelling pretest will take place on Monday, November 14th and our final spelling test will take place on Tuesday, November 15th.

Our math lessons are really fun and interesting. The students love the manipulatives that are used in class which help reinforce the concepts that we are learning about. This week we will learn the following material in math:

1. How to use logical reasoning to solve a problem
2. Addition facts: Adding 0
3. Covering a design in different ways
4. Counting to 10’s by 100.

We will also have a math assessment on Tuesday, November 8th. The test will consist of the following:

1. Writing numbers when you count
2. Some, some more & some, some went away stories
3. Finding which shape/item is different
4. Completing patterns
5. Addition facts

In phonics we will be learning how to blend, read and build regular long a words (CVCe). I will be teaching the students that wehn a word has a consonant-vowel-consonant-silent e pattern, the vowel usually stands for its long sound. We will also be working on the different sounds for C and G. The letter c usually stands for /s/ when it is followed by e, i, or y, and g usually stands for /j/ when it is followed by e or i.

I hope you have a great week. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 570-874-0466 ext. 3217, note, or via email at jwiscount@northschuylkill.net.
