This will be a very busy week in our classroom. We will continue working on The Farmer in the Hat and on Wednesday we will start our new reading story, Who Works Here? This story is nonfiction and tells about real people and real events. In Who Works Here? we will be working on author’s purpose (Why did the author write this particular piece? Was it to give us information on a particular subject or to entertain us?) We will also be working on asking questions while we are reading. This is very important because it helps us understand and remember what we are reading.
Our test on The Farmer in the Hat will take place on Tuesday, November 15th.
We will continue working on balancing objects in science.
In grammar we will continue working on identifying proper nouns. We will have the proper nouns test on Tuesday, November 15th. For the rest of the week, we will be working on special titles. I will be teaching the children that a title can sometimes come before the name of a person. A title must begin with a capital letter and some titles end with a period.
In phonics we will be working on long I (CVCe). We have been working on CVCe patterns and the children know that when a word has a vowel-consonant-silent e pattern, the vowel usually stands for its long sound. We will also be discussing new digraphs, wh, ch, tch. Digraphs are letters that make their own unique sound. Digraph wh, actually makes the /hw/ sounds, as in whale. The wh comes at the beginning of words. Digraph ch also can come at the beginning of words (examples: chip, cheese) or at the end of words (examples: such, which). Digraph tch come in the middle or at the end of words and also makes the /ch/ sound (examples: fetch, pitch). In phonics we have been reading decodable readers which contain the new sounds we are learning. Please read these books with your child to help reinforce the new strategies we are learning.
This week in math, we will be working on the following:
1. Subtracting facts: Subtracting 1
2. Identifying identical designs
3. Counting dimes
4. Counting by 2’s
We will have fact assessment on Tuesday, November 15th and a math test on Wednesday, November 16. This test will consist of:
1. Some, some more and some, some went away problems
2. Counting forward and backwards
3. Identifying shapes (triangles, rectangles, squares, circles)
4. Addition facts
Also, please check my homework helpline for some fun games to help reinforce what we are learning in class.
In spelling, we will have our spelling pretest on Monday, November 14, 2011 and our final spelling test on Tuesday, November 15. When we start our new story, Who Works Here? we will have our spelling pretest on Monday, November 21st and our final spelling test on Tuesday, November 22nd.
