Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing holiday. This will be a very busy week for our class. We will be starting our third unit, “Changes”. This unit will discuss how we grow and change and the different changes that take place in nature. To start our unit, I would like to have the students write about how they changed since they were babies. If possible, please send in a baby picture of your child to display on our hallway bulletin board. These pictures will be returned in February.
We will continue working on building toys that spin. This week we will build twirlers out of straws and paper. Please look for these in your child’s bag by the end of the week.
In math we will work on the following:
1.Comparing and ordering objects by length
2.Writing numbers 0-10 using words
3.Identifying pairs
4.Graphing pieces used to cover a design
5.Reading a graph
Our next fact assessment will take place on Friday, January 6th and our next written assessment will take place on Tuesday, January 10th.
In reading we will be working on comparing and contrasting (looking at how things are the same and different). We will also be working on making predictions. Good readers use the text and pictures to make predictions about what will happen next in a story. While reading with your child, please encourage them to make predictions. This week we will be reading the story, An Egg is an Egg (pgs. 14-27). We will start this story on Wednesday, January 4th. At this time, our reading test is scheduled for Wednesday, January 11th.
In spelling we will focus on the different vowel sounds of y. When y is at the end of a word, it stands for either the long i sound or the long e sound. At this time, our spelling pretest will take place on Tuesday, January 10th and our final spelling test will take place on Wednesday, January 11th.
In phonics we will continue reading words that focus on the different vowel sounds for y. We will also focus on long vowel sounds (CV or consonant-vowel). When a word or a syllable ends with a single vowel, the vowel sound is usually long. Examples would be: hello, she, he, go. Throughout the week you will find decodable readers coming home with your child. Please take time to read these with your child. These books reinforce the phonics concepts taught in class.
In grammar we will be working on action verbs. Action verbs tell what someone or something is doing. The grammar assessment will take place on Wednesday, January 11th.
