Homework for the week of January 9, 2012

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Now that we are getting back in the swing of things, this will be another nice week, hopefully with no snow! On Tuesday and Wednesday we have our Dibels testing scheduled. We will also have several assessments taking place this week.

In reading we will continue working on comparing and contrasting. To compare is to describe how two things are alike. To contrast is to describe how two ideas or things are different. Our reading assessment on An Egg is an Egg will take place on Wednesday, January 11th. We will start our next story on the same day. The next story is titled Ruby in Her Own Time. Throughout this story we will focus on plot. A plot is made up of what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of a story. We will also be working on summarizing. While reading with your child, have them summarize the story to you. When they summarize, they are recalling the most important parts of a story by using the least amount of words possible.

Our spelling pretest will take place on Tuesday, January 10th and our final spelling test will take place on Wednesday, January 11th. We will also get our new spelling list for Ruby in Her Own Time on January 11th.

In grammar we will continue working on identifying action verbs. Action verbs tell what someone or something does. Our grammar assessment will also take place on Wednesday, January 11th. On Thursday we will look at verbs that add –s. A verb with an s on the end can tell what a person, animal, or thing does. When we add an –s, it shows that it is being done now. An example of this would be: She hops to the park.

In science we are making different types of toys that demonstrate spinning. Last week we started making twirlers and we will continue making these toys this week. We will also read a story in science that connects to our investigations. The story is titled, Things that Spin.

This week in math we will be working on the following:

1. Identifying ordinal position to 26th
2. Writing money amounts using the cent symbol
3. Paying for items using dimes and pennies
4. Dividing a square into halves
5. Subtraction facts: Subtracting 2

Our math assessment will take place on Tuesday, January 10th and will consist of the following:

1. Writing number sentences
2. Identifying pennies and dimes
3. Counting pennies and dimes
4. Filling in missing numbers
5. Understanding odd and even numbers
6. Addition and subtraction facts
7. Showing time on a face clock

This week in phonics we will be working on the consonant digraph –ng and –nk. These two digraphs come at the end of words and stand for a single sound that is different from either consonant alone. We will also be working on compound words. A compound word is made up of two or more shorter words.
Several reminders:

1. Please remember to dress your child appropriately for outdoor recess. There will be times that we will be outside for recess-even on cold days.
2. Book orders are due January 20th
3. Teacher In-service on Monday, January 16th – No school.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Have a wonderful week!
