Mrs. Wiscount’s Newsletter for the Week of September 12, 2016

Welcome back to another fun-filled week! This week we will be starting our reading story, The Twin Club. Throughout this story, we will be focusing our attention on characters and setting. Characters are the people or animals in the story. The setting is the place and time of a story. When reading stories with your child at home, try to discuss the characters and setting of the story.

Our reading books will be coming home on Thursday evening. Please cover the reading book ASAP. Your child should be bringing their reading book home each evening in order to practice their reading story.

Grammar – This week in grammar we will be identifying sentences. Sentences always start with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark.

Phonics & Spelling – We will be focusing on reading short vowel words this week. I will be sending a list of our spelling words home on Thursday. Please check your child’s HORSE folder for these words. Our spelling assessment will take place at the end of next week.

Science – We will start the year off by investigating outer space. In our first unit we will be learning about the sun, moon, stars, and the solar system. We will be completing two experiments this week. During the first experiment we will be tracking the sun across the sky and later this week we will be observing what happens to a crayon that is placed in the sun.

Math – Please check your child’s HORSE folder for the addition flashcards that will be coming home this evening. The students will have a timed assessment on Friday, September 16^th on the +0 and +1 math facts.

We will also be working on writing addition and subtraction number stories during math lessons this week.

Reminders for the upcoming week:

1.     PTO meeting on Monday, September 12^th. With our field trip being early this year, you may want to attend to make sure all your clearances are up-to-date.

2.    Tuesday is picture day. Please remember to have pictures taken in a dress code appropriate outfit.

3.    We will be on a two-hour delay on Wednesday due to our Data Delay.

4.    If interested in being a guest reader in our classroom, please contact me ASAP.

5.    If interested in joining us on our field trip to Lake Tobias, please let me know ASAP. Our field trip will take place on Thursday, October 6, 2016.
