Mrs. Wiscount’s Newsletter for the Week of September 19, 2016

I hope everyone enjoyed the last weekend of summer. This week we will continue our reading story, The Twin Club. Throughout this story, we will be focusing our attention on characters and setting. Characters are the people or animals in the story. The setting is the place and time of a story. When reading stories with your child at home, try to discuss the characters and setting of the story.

Our reading books will continue to come home each evening. If you haven’t done so already, please have your child cover their reading book. We will also be starting our Accelerated Reading Program. Students are required to read books each month. Once they read the books, they will take an on-line assessment. If they pass their on-line assessment, they will receive “AR Points”. Each student is required to receive 2 points each month. The student with the most points at the end of the year in our class will win Knoebels tickets.

Grammar – This week in grammar we will be identifying sentences. Sentences always start with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark. Our assessment will take place on Friday.

Phonics & Spelling – We will be focusing on reading short vowel words this week. We are also reading words with VC/CV patterns. Examples of VC/CV words would be: basket, picnic, kitten, magnet. Our phonics and spelling assessment will take place on Friday.

Science – We will start the year off by investigating outer space. In our first unit we will be learning about the sun, moon, stars, and the solar system. We will be completing two experiments this week. During the first experiment we will be tracking the sun across the sky and later this week we will be observing what happens to a crayon that is placed in the sun.

Math – Please check your child’s HORSE folder for the addition flashcards that will be coming home this evening. The students will have a timed assessment on Friday, September 23rd on the +2 math facts.
We will also be working on writing addition and subtraction number stories during math lessons this week and using objects to solve problems. We will take time to review for our assessment, which will take place on Thursday.

Reminders for the upcoming week:

1.     We have one parent volunteer for our field trip. If you are interesting in joining us on our field trip to Lake Tobias, please let me know ASAP. Our field trip will take place on Thursday, October 6th.

2.     If interested in being a guest reader in our classroom, please contact me ASAP.

3.     Please send home a little sweater/jacket for your child to keep in their cubbie. Our classroom can be a bit cool at time.

4.     I will be making parent phone calls in the upcoming weeks to inform you of your child’s progress so far in class. The phone calls will be spread throughout this week and next week.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via email, jwiscount@northschuylkill.net, note, or by calling 570-874-0466 ext. 3209.
