Classroom Newsletter for the Week of October 10, 2016

Mrs. Wiscount’s Newsletter for the Week of
October 10, 2016
Welcome back to another great week at NSE. This will be a short week for the students. Yesterday was a holiday break and tomorrow we will have a two-hour data delay. I would also like to thank Mrs. Sematavage, Mrs. Weikel, Mrs. Harvilla, and Mrs. Wendling for chaperoning our field trip. Our class had a fantastic time. Thank you for all your help!!!

This week in reading we will focus on our story, Henry and Mudge. This story highlights character and setting. Characters are the people or animals in the story. Authors describe characters’ traits. The setting is the place and time of a story. A story can have more than one setting.

Grammar – This week in grammar we will be identifying the predicate of a sentence. The predicate of a sentence tells what someone or something does.

Example: Henry’s mother made a campfire.
Made a campfire would be the predicate because it told me what Henry’s mother did.

Phonics & Spelling – We will be focusing on reading CVe words. These are words that contain the sneaky e at the end. Examples of sneaky e words would be: face, age, Pete, dime, etc.

We will also be working with words that contain consonant blends. Consonant blends can come at the beginning of a word, at the end of a word, or in the middle of a word.

Examples: pumpkin, scrub, black, and splendid

Science – We are still reading and discussing the solar system. Our assessment will take place next week. Please look for a study guide to come home on Thursday evening. Please review this study guide and the flashcards to ensure that your child is prepared for the assessment.

Math – Please continue to practice the flashcards that were sent home in the past. These cards are +1, +2, and +3. The students need more practice with these facts, so I will not be sending new flashcards home this week. We will have an assessment on +1, +2, and +3 facts on Friday. Please continue to practice these flashcards in order to increase fluency.

We will be working on the following in class this week:

1.     Making ten to add
2.     Drawing a picture and writing number sentences
3.     Reviewing for our assessment on Thursday
4.     Math assessment scheduled for Friday.

Reminders for the upcoming week:
