Class News for the Week of September 18, 2017

ReadingThis week we will be focusing our attention on reading long vowel words (CVe) and we are still establishing reading groups. During this time, we are practicing how to work on our “Story Elements Portfolio”. Also, your child will be bringing home high-frequency word flashcards. Please practice these words. Test will be on Friday.

In addition, I like to give differentiated homework to the students based on their reading ability. This week your child will either have a decodable reader for homework or a reading packet. Please check your child’s folder each evening. Either way, please have your child read the book or assigned pages in the packet three times and please sign on the stamped area stating that homework was completed.

Writing – Last week our class wrote friendly letters to our computer teacher, Mr. Glessner. The children were so surprised when he wrote back to them!! We will continue to work on writing these letters. If you get a chance, take a quick trip to the local post office and show your child around. We have been talking a lot about how our mail system works.

Math - We will review and practice using small groups in our classroom. We will discuss our routine and expectations on how groups should run smoothly and properly within our classroom. During this time, we will also focus our attention on addition. Please practice the addition flashcards each evening with your child. We will have an addition quiz on Friday. Also, the students will have a math worksheet each evening for homework. It could be an addition sheet or the back of the math mat. Please check with your child each evening.

ScienceOur focus this week is on the sun and why it is important to life on Earth.

The students did a great job this past week with our PBIS behavior system. This week we are focusing on safety and participation. If your child comes home with a “dress down ticket”, they are permitted to wear what they would like. Please keep in mind that it should be appropriate for school. This means clothing without holes, no inappropriate language, no flip-flops or tank tops.

Reminders

Students will be going outside for recess daily (weather permitting). Please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately.

Due to having a late lunch, our class will be having a snack mid-morning. Please send a snack into school with your child each day.
