Mrs. Wiscount’s Newsletter for the Week of September 26, 2016

Welcome back to another fun-filled week! I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather this past weekend. Our class is settling into a nice routine and our learning is starting to pick up at this time. We just finished our 1st reading and math assessments today. I decided to extend some of the assessments until today to ensure that I received the best results from the students. The results from these assessments will be sent home in your child’s HORSE folder on Friday. Please check the back of the folder for this information. Please review, sign, and send the assessments back to school.

Our reading books will continue to come home each evening. If you haven’t done so already, please have your child cover their reading book. This week in reading we will be starting our new reading story, Exploring Space. This story will focus on main idea and details. Main idea is the most important idea about the topic. Small pieces of information that tell about the main idea are called details. Good readers look for the main ideas to help them understand the story. We will have a reading assessment next week. Please look for more information in next week’s newsletter.

Grammar – This week in grammar we will be identifying the subject of a sentence. The subject of a sentence tells who or what does something.
Example: The girl will be an astronaut.
The girl is the subject because it tells who.

Phonics & Spelling – We will be focusing on reading CVe words. These are words that contain the sneaky e at the end. Examples of sneaky e words would be: face, age, Pete, dime, etc. We will not have a test in phonics and spelling until next week.

Science – We students loved the two science experiments that we completed in class last week. This week we will be focusing our attention on the sun and moon.

Math – Please check your child’s HORSE folder for the addition flashcards that will be coming home this evening. The students will have a timed assessment on Friday, September 30th on the +3 math facts. Also, please continue to practice all flashcards each evening in order to increase fluency.
We will be working on the following in class this week:

1.     Adding 0, 1, & 2
2.     Adding doubles
3.     Adding near doubles
4.     Adding in any order
5.     Adding three digit numbers

Reminders for the upcoming week:

1.     We have one parent volunteer for our field trip. If you are interesting in joining us on our field trip to Lake Tobias, please let me know ASAP. Our field trip will take place on Thursday, October 6th.

2.     If interested in being a guest reader in our classroom, please contact me ASAP.

3.     Please send home a little sweater/jacket for your child to keep in their cubbie. Our classroom can be a bit cool at time.
